Range of Diploma Courses after Class 10

Once Class 10 results are out, a student like you needs to decide on a career path. There are so many options and streams available today that it is easy to get confused. While most students and parents tend to think that only your marks will help you decide the course, today it is possible to pursue any career that you are interested in by building skills in that area. Choose a stream such as Arts, Commerce or Science based on your interests and choose the course based on the career you wish to pursue.

If you are interested in a specific field and keen on getting a job in the shortest time possible, Diploma courses will be of great help! You can join a Diploma course soon after you complete Class 10 or after Class 12. These courses are usually shorter, less expensive and provide you with a flexible and comprehensive learning experience. Some higher courses allow Diploma Holders a lateral entry into the second year. Diploma courses provide direct skills and knowledge related to the industry and it is also possible to take up Government jobs after completing a Diploma Program. By taking a Diploma Course directly after class 10, you will have obtained experience and more industry relevant skills very early in your career.

Diploma courses can be roughly classified based on the stream (Arts, Commerce or Science) that is studied after Class 10.

  • Diploma Courses After 10th in Arts include courses in Fine Art, Commercial Art, Graphic Design, Hotel Management, Cosmetology, Stenography, Fashion Technology, etc.
  • Diploma Courses After 10th in Commerce include courses in Banking, Risk and Insurance, Financial Accounting, Accounting, Taxation, etc.
  • Diploma Courses after 10th in Science include courses in Information Technology, Food Production, Dental Hygienist, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering.

  • Polytechnic Diploma Courses

Polytechnic courses are vocational courses that are offered in both Engineering and non-Engineering fields after class 10.  They are usually three-year programs and deliver practical technical education in Management, Education, Engineering and Computer Science to name a few. Some of these courses include:

  • Diploma in Computer Programming (Diploma at NTTF)
  • Graduate Certificate in Marketing Management
  • Diploma in Petroleum Engineering
  • ITI Certificate Courses (Technical)

The Industrial Training Institute, ITI, is run under the craftsman training scheme and offers many technical vocational programs with an average duration of 6 months to 2 years. Students who have passed in class 10 are eligible for ITI courses. The advantage of these courses is that they include training and skill development in a particular trade as well as extensive industry exposure. The courses include:

  • Computer Operator and Programming Assistant
  • Computer Hardware & Network Maintenance
  • Draughtsman (Civil)
  • Mechanic (Refrigeration and Air-Conditioner)
  • Diploma Courses after 10th in Vocational Training

Instead of opting for a polytechnic diploma or an ITI certificate course, you may also opt for a 3-year Diploma in centres that provide Vocational Training. A degree in vocational training is considered to be the best course after the 10th. There is an array of courses that are aimed to equip students with relevant career skills and industry exposure. With the advancement in technologies, Engineering branches have expanded beyond the conventional courses and now range from Robotics courses to Fire and Safety Engineering. The popular courses are in:

  • Software Development
  • Travel & Tourism
  • Medical Imaging
  • Electrical Engineering (Diploma At NTTF)
  • Mechanical Engineering (Diploma At NTTF)


  • Skill Training Programs and courses after 10th

After 10th, you may also opt for a skill training program in a community college and NSDC approved training centre for career options after 10th. Some of the options are:

  • Animator
  • Gems & Jewellery
  • Mobile Phone Technician
  • Solar Photovoltaic System Installer
  • Medical and Paramedical Courses

To pursue Medical Science courses after class 10, you need to study Biology along with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Some of the Medical and Paramedical Courses include:

  • Pathology Lab Technician
  • Diploma in Physiotherapy
  • Diploma in Pharmacy

The key to success after completing a Diploma is of course highly dependent on the aptitude of the candidate. However, your career prospects and the possibility of obtaining a good placement will depend on the quality of the Institute from which you pursue the course. The Institute should be approved and recognized by the appropriate authorities, provide industry relevant training and have a good placement track record.
